The school's Physical Education program is
designed to promote physical fitness, to teach
various skills and to develop good sportsmanship.
In the K-2 level of physical education each
lesson is divided into three components: warm-up,
skill builders, and games and activities.
In the 3-5 level many of the same warm-up and
skill builders are used but at a higher proficiency
level. Improvement is stressed and the child
then moves to new levels. Cardiovascular fitness
is accomplished on the cross country course.
Chalk Talks, lectures about games, rules and
strategy, are a highlight the 3-5 level. The
President's Physical Fitness Tests begin at
this level and all children are tested and evaluated
in five categories - speed and quickness, abdominal
strength, upper body strength, cardiovascular
efficiency and flexibility of legs and lower
back.
Highlights in the 6-8 level include cardiovascular
fitness, balance, perception, co-ordination,
leadership, decision making and independent
work .
Intramural sports start in Grade 4 and give
the children a chance not only to play on teams
with their peers but also with children from
other grades. Interscholastic Programs begin
with Grade 6. Teams representing St. Philomena
School compete against various public and private
schools in soccer and basketball.
