Saint Philomena School's Reading and Language
Arts program integrates components of reading,
writing, listening, speaking and thinking. Across
the grade levels, the Reading/Language Arts
program encompasses a variety of exciting, stimulating,
and authentic activities which are carried out
in whole groups, small groups, and independently.
At the primary level, students love books that rhyme and that repeat
the theme. Through these favorite stories, word attack skills, syllabification
and the rhythm of the language are taught. In the middle school and junior
high, students continue to sharpen their basic grammar, writing and language
skills while developing an appreciation for works of literature and poetry.
The Reading/Language Arts program integrates all curriculum areas through
science and social studies thematic units. These thematic units stress creative
writing, book publishing, and a variety of innovative activities.
To stimulate and heighten the students' reading interest and to motivate
and reach all individuals' levels, the children are continuously exposed
to many opportunities of reading aloud, silent reading, book presentations,
and book discussions.
Saint Philomena School's Reading/Language Arts curriculum features a
balanced program which recognizes the individual needs of the students in
the learning process.
