Religion is taught at St. Philomena School
in various ways. The faculty recognizes that
religion is taught by living the faith and stressing
the importance of Christian values in everyday
living, as well as through the religion curriculum.
Learning to live as Christians is a primary
goal for St. Philomena School students.
Recognizing that liturgy is the highest form
of prayer, students from Grades 3 to 8 prepare
several liturgies throughout the year. Masses
are celebrated by local priests or the school's
chaplain. The students select their own readings
and music, and in the upper grades, write their
own prayers. Students in Grade 2 prepare for
First Eucharist and Reconciliation. Retreats
are sponsored by the administration for families,
the faculty and certain grades throughout the
year.

Discussions on religion are not limited to
just one class period per day. Christian values
may be examined during a literature class, for
instance, or may be part of a thematic unit
which integrates religion, social studies, and
art classes.
At St. Philomena School, putting faith into
actions is very important. Community service
is stressed each day and there are special efforts
for targeted organizations, selected by students,
made during the seasons of Lent and Advent.
Religion at St. Philomena School is not just
a subject, but is the very center of the curriculum
and is taught every day in many ways.
