General science is taught to Grades K-6, using
a hands-on approach. In the primary years, the
scientific method, use of a microscope and the
lab report are all introduced. A variety of
speakers are invited in throughout the year
and students enjoy many science-related field
trips. In the spring, kindergarten conducts
a Science Day where they demonstrate their experiments
to the school, staff and parents.
Grade 4 to 6 students continue
the study of earth, physical and life sciences,
with a science lab conducted once a week in
addition to the class periods. Students at this
age level also experience a variety of field
trips to complement their science studies, some
right in their own back yard! St. Philomena
School classes are fortunate to be able to take
advantage of the school's setting on the shores
of Narragansett Bay for studies of oceanography
and marine science. A Nature Trail has been
constructed on school property, which offers
an outdoor classroom for plant and animal studies.

Seventh graders concentrate on life science
and eighth graders, physical science. The junior
high students also spend part of the first half
of the year preparing for the school's Science
Fair. Winning entries go on to the State Science
Fair and the school regularly has students winning
honors at this level.
